Ann Arbor Concert Band presents Women in Winds – Shattering Glass

Our 45th anniversary season continues as Artistic Director and Conductor David Leach, presents “Women in Winds – Shattering Glass!”, a celebration of the musical genius, imagination and contributions of women composers to Concert Band / Wind Ensemble repertoire. Selections include “Early Light” by Carolyn Bremer, Erika Svanoe’s “Steampunk Suite”, “Tatarian Dances” by Elena Roussanova Lucas and Roshanne Etezady’s “Anahita”. We are honored to welcome guest conductors Dr. Pam Klena (Oakland University), Dr. Mary Land (Western Michigan University), E. Benton Lilliefors (Ann Arbor Pioneer High School) and Dr. Courtney Snyder (University of Michigan). Honoring Ann Arbor’s Bicentennial celebration, we recognize Ann Arbor as a hotbed of suffrage activism, leading to Michigan women’s right to vote in 1918 before it was nationally enacted by performing “Remembering the Remarkables” by Grace Baugher. We salute the US Women Marines Reserve Band (est. 1943) whose first conductor was Ann Arbor’s Charlotte Owen with “March of the Women Marines”. Charlotte was appointed director of the Ann Arbor Civic Band in 1986.
