When you think of tubas if you just think of the “oompah pah pah” background sound, think again as tubas fill the chancel in Central’s sanctuary and play a full concert of Christmas carols and other holiday tunes arranged so that tubas play every part, including the melody!!! Celebrate the Christmas season and tuba virtuosity with Merry TubaChristmases ,which are held all over the world. The first one was held in New York City at Rockfeller Center’s ice rink in 1974. This year is the 51st anniversary of Merry TubaChristmasworldwide. Detroit’s Merry TubaChristmas has been a tradition since 2009. There also will be a prelude by a French Horn trio including a member of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (Kristy Krago), and an offertory piece by her husband, flotist Caen Thomasson-Redus. Our new conductor debuting at this concert is Raven Ross, music educator, tubist, and all-around musician.
This free concert will be presented at 12 noon on Saturday December 14th in the sanctuary of Central United Methodist Church, 23 E. Adams, Detroit, MI 48226 (at Woodward and right next to Comerica Park). Parking is free as well (tell the attendant you are there for Merry TubaChristmas). A free-will offering will be taken to support NOAH at Central (www.noahatcentral.org), a nonprofit created by Central UMC that supports people who are unhoused on their individual journeys to stable housing. .
